Great Galloping Heavenly Horse

A Fast QMDJ Technique To Determine Your Escape Direction

In Qi Men Dun Jia, we are taught there are ways to escape from danger or being captured if you are being pursued by running towards a specific direction. Typically this entails the use of one of the BaMeng T (8 Doors) directions - DuMen T or sometimes ShengMen T to escape from danger. To do this, you will need to plot the QMDJ chart of the hour and locate the direction of these doors. In practice, this is not very useful because of the need to plot the QMDJ chart. If you do not have a portable QMDJ chart plotting device such as a smartphone or PDA, you will not have the time or the patience to plot a chart to find your escape direction.

In such a situation, the Great Galloping Heavenly Horse ̫_R technique allows you to quickly determine the direction to run towards.

To use this technique, there are a few things you need to remember at all times. They are:-

1. Know your 24 mountains directions. Carry a small portable compass with you showing the standard 24 mountains direction at all times.

2. Know the current month and the current time in terms of the earthly branches. For example, 17th April 2010 at 4.30pm is Chen (dragon) month and the time is Shen hour. Chen is 3rd month of the year. In solar calandar, Feburary 4th is the start of the month for the year.

If you are able to remember the above, then it is very easy to use the Great Galloping Heavenly Horse ̫_R technique as shown below.

Lets use an example to illustrate the technique using the date and time of 17th April 2010 at 4.30pm.

Given the date and time, we know the month is Chen (dragon), which is the 3rd month of the year and the hour is Shen (monkey). Using the standard 12-palace grid chart below, locate the Chen month. The palace Chen represent the 1st month of the year based on the chart below. Take note that the Chen palace is always the starting palace for counting clockwise around the 12-palalce grid.

Start counting clockwise from the Chen palace until you reach the current month. For April 17th, we should count until Wu palace, which is the 3rd month of the year.

From the Wu palace, we then start to count clockwise again, this time by counting the hour, beginning with Zi hour. Counting from Zi clockwise, we should reach Shen hour (3pm to 5pm) at Yin palace. Therefore Yin direction is the Great Galloping Heavenly Horse ̫_R direction and is a good direction to head if you are escaping from danger. Using your compass, look for the Yin mountain and start heading in that direction to make your escape.

This method is fast and can be calculated quickly using the fingers of your palm as long you know the month and time for any moment. For those who wants to refer to the original Chinese table, a copy of the Great Galloping Heavenly Horse ̫_R is reproduced here.
